She was nervous as she stepped into the drab office for the meeting. At least there were flowers to look at among the piles of stacked boxes while she waited. Rajan entered cheerfully and shook her hand.
“Lovely day isn’t it? Hope you could find our office easily.”
“Oh yes! No problem.”
“Please, how can I help you Mrs. Karthik”.
“Actually” she hesitated. “How do I say this? As you know, you owe the bank more than 10 lakhs. I have come to tell you that if this situation continues, we would need to confiscate your assets. Hope you understand.”

I can quite understand Mrs Karthik’s nervousness. Poor Rajan, not as lovely a day, after all.

Stacked boxes? She might have trouble finding any assets if he’s moving out.

Dear Fluid Phrase,
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for both of them. It didn’t feel like she was all too enthused about being the bearer of bad news. Well done.
Shalom,

Thank you! Yes. She doesn’t like this job at all. She tries her best to be gentle. But that is far too difficult and actually against her job. You caught that right! They both are in a difficult situation.

Very good writing. A nice story arc which tells us one thing while hinting at a different ending, two well drawn characters with depth to them, and an unexpected twist. Well done!

Thanks Penny! Every job is tough in its own way. And everybody has a side that might not be immediately apparent. That is what I wanted to bring out here. Just because someone is in a position of power, does not mean they enjoy it.

I’m not sure, Fluid, if this is going to end well, but, at least there are flowers.
Swell set-up for the story and good dialogue.
Nicely done!

So, I had to educate myself and go find out how much a lakh is worth in US dollars. A lot! He has a big debt to repay. I felt kind of sorry for both of these people.

Oh… Sorry I didn’t put that in as a comment. Really appreciate you getting to know the numbers.
I feel sorry for them too. They both seem like good people….

Such a polite debt collector! In light of the stack of boxes, was he about to abscond before the nice bank lady turned up? Great tale

Thank you! He is running a business that is making loss although he is trying his best. She was meeting him in his office. That’s how I had pictured this.

Not a good day for Rajan and certainly not for Mrs. K , the harbinger of unpleasant news but bill shave to be cleared.

Such politeness – a debt collect who really enjoys their job, maybe, or maybe it was false humour – I felt sorry for them both. And all those people’s lives in those cardboard boxes. Nice that we are not moving (relocating) in this one. Well done.

oooof! Some jobs are hard to do. I like how you led up to the situation so that I almost thought she was a prospective employee and you turned it on its ear. Well done!
